House continues debate on big, beautiful bill

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Congress marches toward President Donald Trump’s July 4th deadline to get the “big, beautiful bill” to his desk.

It includes a permanent extension of the 2017 tax cuts and steep cuts to healthcare and snap benefits.

Both the Senate and the House have passed their versions of the big, beautiful bill but each time one of the chambers changes it, the other has to vote to approve the changes.

House members rushed back to Washington, D.C., after the Senate passed its version on Tuesday but thunderstorms and flight cancellations delayed the initial debates.

House Democrats say they’re doing what they can to stall the vote by attaching amendments and creating a conga line of opposition.

“We can convince more people we’ll give even the public more time to call in and talk about how they don’t like this bill either,” said Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.).

Most Republicans say they support the big, beautiful bill.

“This bill delivers economic relief, fiscal sanity and basic fairness,” said Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.).

The chair of the budget-conscious House Freedom Caucus says the Senate’s changes to the bill add to the deficit and a block of Republican members can’t support them.

President Trump met with Republican holdouts at the White House on Wednesday.

Republican holdouts say the big, beautiful bill adds too much to the deficit, $750 billion.

Democrats say they’re against massive Medicaid cuts in the bill.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates 11.8 million Americans would lose healthcare.
