SENATE MOVES: Congresswoman Robin Kelly is drawing national attention for introducing three articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, accusing the Trump administration of deadly and unchecked immigration enforcement.
“Real people are being hurt and killed,” Kelly said Wednesday at a Capitol Hill press conference announcing the resolution, citing the killing of a Minnesota woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. “If we do nothing, nothing will happen.” ABC 7 has more.
Good timing: While the impeachment effort faces little chance of success in a Republican-led Congress, it allows Kelly to stake out a prominent role criticizing President Donald Trump’s immigration policy just as the issue is resonating with Democratic voters.
The move also fuels a heated Democratic primary in the Illinois U.S. Senate race. Kelly faces fellow Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, and others, each trying to carve out their own lane.
