PRESS RELEASE

ROBIN KELLY HOLDS GROCERY STORE TOWN HALL & GIVEAWAY AS CHICAGOANS CONFRONT HIGH COSTS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

While Trump Calls Affordability Crisis A “Hoax,” Kelly Works to Help Struggling Chicagoans

CHICAGO - Congresswoman and U.S. Senate candidate Robin Kelly today held a grocery store town hall and grocery giveaway as Chicagoans confront the high cost of living this holiday season. Kelly met with local shoppers at La Fruteria market in South Chicago to hear their concerns about the rising cost of everything from groceries to rent.

“Times are tough for a lot of people, and the high cost of everyday living is an issue that needs to be tackled head on,” Kelly said. “It shouldn’t be this hard for people to buy groceries and pay their bills. I’m running to be the next Illinois Senator to help make it easier for people across the state to earn a living. At this time of year, people should be able to celebrate the holidays with their families without worry.”

Although deemed a “hoax” by President Trump, the affordability crisis is all too real for many Illinoisans. Kelly’s People Over Profits platform will make the well-off and well-connected pay their fair share and ensure working people get the support they need to build a future.

“We see how hard it is for people to buy groceries every day in our store,” La Fruteria owner Tony Macias said. “For Robin Kelly to come here, genuinely hear people’s concerns, and donate groceries makes a difference. I know Robin grew up helping run a family-owned grocery store, so we appreciate this full-circle moment and the work she is doing for real people.”

A local shopper who met with Kelly in the grocery store was grateful not just for a bag of needed food, but to be able to share candid thoughts on the obstacles people are facing.

“I was not expecting to run into Congresswoman Kelly at the grocery store today, but it was wonderful to have her in our neighborhood, hearing our concerns, caring about our families and doing the things real leaders do,” South Chicago resident Jessica Smith said. “Robin Kelly walks the walk.”
