Kelly leans on political experience in Senate race, cites need for immigration and education reform

Congresswoman Robin Kelly feels she was put on Earth to be a public servant. She’s been in the U.S. House since 2013. Before that, she was Chief of Staff for then-Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. She also worked in Cook County government administration and spent four years in the Illinois House. Now she’s asking Democratic voters to nominate her for the U.S. Senate race.

"I've worked on every level of government. I've been an effective leader. I'm a coalition builder. I have relationships in the House and Senate. I can hit the ground running, you know, on day one, because I'm there and I'm doing the work right now. I've been a team player, so I've helped other Democrats get elected. It hasn't just been about me."

Kelly hopes peace between Israel and the Palestinians is fair for each side. She’d like for people to be able to work off student loan debts. And she says the country needs immigration reform, something Congress has been talking about since she became a member.

"But our Republican speaker wouldn't call the bill in the House. And then we were working on it when Trump was running. And when he told them, stop, they stopped. You know, he wanted to run on the problem, not solve the problem. But we need immigration reform from dreamers to the over 11 million that have been here, that have been working, contributing to this country, asylum seekers. We, you know, what we're going to do as far as border safety. And we need diplomats and ambassadors in all of these countries."

Kelly represents the second Congressional District, which reaches from the southern part of Chicago to Danville and Pontiac.
